Commute now BE

Getting it running

Commute now BE runs on iPhone, iOS 17 or later. Setup is two steps: a key for driving times, and one trip described once. There is a short video if you would rather watch than read.

Create the TomTom key

Driving times come from TomTom, which needs a key of your own. It is free and takes about a minute.

  • Make an account at developer.tomtom.com.
  • Create a key and make sure the Routing API is enabled on it.
  • Paste the key into the app when it asks on first launch.

The app checks the key against TomTom before saving it, so you find out straight away if it was pasted wrong or if Routing is not switched on. The key is stored in the iPhone Keychain.

Describe the trip

Tell it where you start, where you need to be, and the ways you might take it. A station you drive to, a station you cycle to, or driving the whole way and parking. Each way can have its own costs, so the comparison reflects what the day actually costs you.

When something looks wrong

  • A station says train data unavailable. iRail could not answer for that route. It is usually temporary. Pull to refresh.
  • Driving times are missing. The key is missing, wrong, or Routing is not enabled on it. Settings shows the key status and lets you replace it.
  • It thinks you are somewhere else. Location permission is off, so it falls back to the start you configured. Turn it on in iOS Settings under Privacy and Security.
  • The fare looks off. Fares are worked out per kilometre from the distance set on that option. Open the option and correct the distance, the parking cost, or the discount card settings.

Moving a commute between phones

Swipe a commute in the list and choose Share to write a .commute file, or export all of them from the menu. On the other phone, open the file and it imports as a copy. Nothing you already have is overwritten.

Get in touch

Mail commute@nys.studio. It helps to say what you expected to see, what appeared instead, and roughly when, so the train and traffic data can be checked against that moment.
